El-Sisi holds talks with Putin on sidelines of BRICS summit in China

Egypt’s president Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi met with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Monday, on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in the Chinese city of Xiamen, state-run news agency MENA reported.The meeting included talks on several bilateral and international topics of a common interest. According to the presidency spokesperson Alaa Youssef, Putin praised the increase in trade between the two countries, as well as the bilateral coordination on regional and international issues. Meanwhile, El-Sisi invited Putin to attend a celebration at the site of the Dabaa nuclear-power station, which Egypt is planning to build with Russian assistance. El-Sisi is also expected to holding bilateral meetings with his Chinese and Indian counterparts during the three-day summit, as well as meeting with a number of large Chinese companies investing in Egypt.Earlier today, Sisi delivered a speech before the BRICS Business Forum, where he spoke of Egypt’s economic reform program, and related reforms of the subsidy system and social security system.

Italian ambassador to return to Cairo on 14 September: Italian foreign minister

Italy’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Angelino Alfano announced on Monday that the Italian ambassador to Egypt, Giampaolo Cantini, will take up his position in Cairo on 14 September, state-run news agency MENA reported. Egypt’s ambassador to Italy, Hesham Badr, will resume his role in Rome on the same date.Alfano made the announcement during a session of the foreign affairs committee at the Italian parliament, according to Italy’s AGI new agency: “Egypt is an inextricable partner of Italy, and also Italy is an inextricable partner of Egypt”, said Alfano. “Therefore, it is impossible for our countries not to have high-level political and diplomatic dialogue”. Alfano also said that sending Cantini to Cairo is intended to consolidate the political and ethical obligations of the Italian government regarding the search for the truth about the murder of Italian researcher Guilio Regeni.

 

Minister Ivaylo Moskovski: Memorandum with Greece to define transport corridor

The corridor is aimed at integrated connectivity, business and industry development, and operating compatibility between the two European states. The corridor combines rail and port infrastructure. The two countries will together study the rates of return and traffic. According to Moskovski, a period of 10 years is real, objective and sufficient for the construction of the corridor. Investments in the Bulgarian section alone are estimated at EUR 1.07 billion. The options for financing are currently discussed with the Greek colleagues. The project could be financed under the Juncker plan or attract the interest of the European Investment Bank and the other major banks, the minister said.

Taliban commanders among 25 killed, wounded in Helmand airstrikes

At least twenty five Taliban insurgents were killed or wounded during the air strikes in southern Helmand (province of Afghanistan), the Ministry of Defense (MoD) said Monday. The three local Taliban commanders killed during the air strikes have been identified as Mullah Khaliqdad, Mullah Musafir, and Khayal Mohammad, MoD added. The air strikes targeted the hideouts of the insurgents that led to the casualties to the Taliban insurgents and four hideouts of the group were destroyed in total. The anti-government armed militant groups have not commented regarding the report so far. Helmand remains one of the most volatile provinces in southern Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001 where terrorist related incidents are frequently reported from its various districts.

BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) leaders strongly condemned terrorist attacks on innocent Afghan nationals on Monday. The countries, adopting the Xiamen Declaration, agreed to strengthen cooperation against a range of terror groups. A statement issued by the participants deplored “all terrorist attacks worldwide” and condemned terrorism “in all its forms and manifestations wherever committed and by whomsoever” adding that there can be no justification for any act of terrorism. The statement said nations should unite to fight the groups in accordance with the principles of international law, but emphasized the importance of not interfering in the sovereign affairs of individual states. The ninth BRICS summit chaired by Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed the need for immediate cessation of violence in Afghanistan and reaffirmed their support to the people of Afghanistan.

 

Red Crescent: Bodies continue to be found in Benghazi landfills without investigations

The Red Crescent of Benghazi said that bodies are still being found in landfills, adding that those bodies were for people killed in gunshots while their hands tied and they had clear torture marks on them.The Red Crescent in Benghazi told the Tripoli branch in a letter in late August that no investigation was allowed into the issue. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant of the notorious senior commander of Al-Saiqa Force of Dignity Operation, Mahmoud Al-Werfalli, over war crimes he committed in and around Benghazi.The ICC clarified that Al-Werfalli has been accused of personally shooting or ordering the execution of people who were either civilians or injured fighters in at least seven incidents in 2016 and 2017, saying he is responsible for the killing of 33 persons.

Sixteen civilians executed in Islamic State-held towns in Anbar

Islamic State has executed sixteen civilians in western Anbar towns, an informed security source said. Speaking to Alghad Press on Sunday, the source said, “IS militants executed 16 youths in the evening in each of Annah, Qaim and Rawa towns over spying for security troops”. Earlier on the day, the militant group reportedly tightened measures on citizens in Qaim, al-Ebeidi town and Okashat region. Curfew has been imposed since the morning. Tens of leaders, who likely ran away from Aiyadhiya and Tal Afar, arrived on Saturday in Qaim. Fighter jets from the Iraqi army and the international coalition regularly pound IS locations in the province. In late July, a military source was quoted saying that Lt.Gen Abdul-Amir Yarallah, commander of the Nineveh Operations, ordered to besiege IS havens in western Anbar preparing to invade them.

Pakistan’s foreign minister Khawajah Asif on Saturday reacted at President Ghani’s remarks regarding Kabul’s readiness to hold peace talks with Pakistan.
